Parents sometimes wish there was a guidebook when it comes to raising kids. Helping Kids Thrive is a free annual parenting conference full of practical tips and information for parents, grandparents and other caregivers. It’s for parents of infants to teens.

CLASS DESCRIPTIONS

Empowering Successful Kids: As parents, we spend a lot of time thinking about what we don't want our children to do or become. It's even more important, though, to have a clear idea of what we do want. Using the Asset Framework, we can work together to raise healthy kids.

When to Worry: Every day we hear about youth in crisis. Understand the hidden messages and red flags as well as what steps to take and what resources are available. Session A will focus on elementary students. Session B will focus on adolescents and tweens.

Cyber Awareness & Safety: Learn the signs of being cyber bullied and how you can help. Learn strategies to encourage your child to make wise choices on the Internet. Teach kids to protect themselves, their reputation, and their content in cyberspace.

Healthy Families: Learn about the 5-2-1-0 Healthy Kids Countdown - a program emphasizing healthy nutritional choices and behaviors by asking kids (and their families) to do four simple things. Take home BMI and Heart Smart tools to help monitor everyone's progress and get healthier together!

Helping Kids Thrive was started in 1990 by a coalition of community organizations who were concerned about the high incidence of youth suicide in Jefferson County and the prevalence of other destructive behaviors, such as drug/alcohol abuse and youth violence.

At Helping Kids Thrive gain insight as to why life is easier for some kids and not for others, why some kids involve themselves in dangerous activities and others avoid them, why some “beat the odds” and others don’t.
