Celebrating Pride Month: The Vital Role of Community Mental Health for LGBTQIA+

Dear Community,
I am honored to connect with you as the new President and CEO at Jefferson Center. Since my first day in May, I have been energized and uplifted by the incredible work our teams do each day to serve you, our community. A profound and recurring theme I have experienced is that of togetherness. It is through togetherness that we are stronger, we find collaboration with each other, and we are able to build on the incredible 67-year foundation Jefferson Center has built.
For countless individuals, the care we provide is irreplaceable, especially for our LGBTQIA+ communities. We believe every individual deserves respect and to live their lives fully and authentically every day. Mental health care for our LGBTQIA+ communities is vital, ensuring access to compassionate and affirming care, focusing on the unique experiences and adversities these communities face. Persistent mental health disparities, including systemic discrimination and stigmatization, underscore the necessity of our role in bridging this gap and ensuring no individual is overlooked.
We are dedicated to moving forward in unity — as professionals, advocates, and community members — to advance mental health for all, especially for those whose voices have historically been silenced. Together, we can create meaningful change and ensure that our community is a steadfast place of hope and healing for all.
With sincere gratitude,
Sarah Alquist
